This album collects together all the essential bits from the third and fourth Limited Edition and out of print albums 'Same Synths Different Day' and 'Baptism of Wire' 'Gremlins In The Desk' uses a short whooshing introduction. You just know that things are about to take off but when they do it is with real power and attitude as a rhythm and fantastic bass sequence combination thunder forward, snarling as they go. Wonderful melodic pads, plus loads of mellotron swell euphorically echoing the melody contained in the sequence. It is superbly effective, taking the level of excitement to new heights. 'While My Filter Gently Sweeps' deploys a deep bass throb, a rapid sequence soon joining it. A second follows in its wake, spitting rapid note runs like multi coloured sparks flying from a firework. It is so full of energy and joy. 'Synthetic Sphinx' meanders with just a hint of mystical Eastern phrasings. A no nonsense echoing pulse starts up through which flies the best and most melodic sequence on the album so far. The whole thing has a rather 'Ricochet' feel to it. Mellotron completes the classic formula. 'No Reservations' features Rob Clynes, the guitarist who helped make 'Apocalypse' so successful. At first the guitar is rather slow and mournful over suitably melancholy pads. A sequence breaks free, battling with the guitar to become the main focus. The guitar becomes more ape but so does the sequence as they continue their dual. An even deeper sequence soon joins the fray and excitement builds to still greater heights and doesn't let up until the track's conclusion.

Tron chords provide a lush beginning to 'Control Freak'. As expected it doesn't take long before a sequence makes an entrance, and quite a melodic one it is too - high register but fairly rapid. Dark ominous fizzing drones add to the build up. The sequence morphs beautifully, gaining power all the time. Those drones also increase in intensity, coming and going in waves, almost like a warning siren. A bass line gives proceedings even greater oomph. It's like being in the middle of a storm, devastation going on all around but somehow being protected from the external forces. 'Secrets in the Sand' heavily features soft mellotron. Exciting rapid pulsations provide its backbone until more strident leads arrive. 'Haunted' gets straight into the sequence. It is wonderfully melodic, bouncing along nicely, weaving the most captivating of spells. Big slabs of bass sound with loads of reverb add to the tension. Spectres fly amongst the pulsations. There is subtlety here as well with every sound beautifully placed. The most awesome of melodies is introduced which transcends an already fantastic track to one of the bands very finest if not THE finest. 'Fuse' uses a sequence and electric guitar combination to kick off proceedings. A bass sequence comes in as the guitar gives it some oomph underpinned by some really nice organ sounds. If you haven't tried The Omega Syndicate yet this album would be a good place to start. (DL)
